General information

Build a turkey hen

Beginning poultry farmers engaged in breeding turkeys, in the early stages of their business, completely cost a small space that can be identified in the corner of the barn. But with the growth of livestock, one has to think about building a separate turkey hen. Capital construction can be ordered in a construction company or build yourself. You can also buy a prefab house, which will only install in the right place. When constructing a turkey-hen it is necessary to solve many questions. They are associated not only with the construction, but also with the location of the house, as well as with the internal equipment.

Requirements for the room

Despite the fact that turkeys, especially adult individuals, birds are unpretentious, the room for breeding turkeys and maintenance must meet certain requirements. These include:

  • the size of the area per individual,
  • appropriate temperature conditions
  • certain level of humidity
  • good ventilation
  • lack of drafts,
  • proper lighting
  • zoning into compartments
  • availability of an open-air cage.

The turkey bird is large, so the area of the house is calculated on the basis of one individual per 1 m 2. Birds need a certain temperature at which they will feel most comfortable. Wrong temperature conditions lead to a decrease in appetite and slow weight gain. Increased humidity is always the cause of various diseases of turkeys in birds, so there must be good supply and exhaust ventilation in the room, preventing drafts from occurring. Good lighting is necessary for the proper and active development of the young. The turkey's room should be divided into zones so that hens with young stock should be kept separately from the rest of the population. A large open-air cage for walking birds in the open air, especially for large breeds, must be attached to the turkey hens.

The largest breed of turkeys can be found in this article.

A place for walking should be planted with grass, clover or alfalfa, as turkeys enjoy the pasture with pleasure.

Choosing a place to build

Basic requirements for the location may look like this:

  • lack of groundwater
  • the presence of solar lighting
  • distance from residential buildings.

The best place for a turkey-bird will be a small elevation, in the place of the site that is well lit by the sun. Place in the valley is not recommended to choose, since the presence of groundwater will affect the humidity level. Shaded areas should be avoided, since ultraviolet solar radiation enhances immunity and promotes good bird growth.

Turkeys, especially at a young age, are rather shy and do not like noise, so the house should be located away from residential buildings, highways and agricultural equipment.

Projects and Drawings

When the place is selected, you can begin to draft. The basis is a typical turkey-hen. In accordance with the conditions of detention, a house for breeding turkeys should consist of the following zones:

  • main room
  • vestibule,
  • playground for walking.

In the main room the birds are constantly. Its size is selected based on the number of livestock. The room should be equipped with perches, a feeding trough, a waterer and a place for dry bathing. It installs lighting, ventilation system and must maintain the required temperature. Tambour prevents the penetration of cold air in the winter season. It can also store tools, equipment for cleaning the house and a supply of dry food. Playground or aviary is attached directly to the main room. The territory is enclosed by a metal grid with a height of at least two meters.

For poults

In farms where the cultivation of turkeys put on stream, provides for a cage for poults, where they are kept separately from adults. The dimensions of the main room can be smaller, since up to 5 poults can be placed per 1 m 2. Thus, up to 30 poults can live in a room of 6 m 2. If the house is intended for laying hens, it should make nests for turkeys, where they will lay and hatch eggs.

About the incubation of turkey eggs can be read on the link.

For adults

The plan of turkey poultry for adult birds remains the same as for the young, only the size should be increased. The walking area should also be much larger. If the area of the site does not allow to place separate poultry houses for young and adult individuals, you can do with one building. At the same time, the interior should be divided into “nursery” and “adult” zones, without the possibility of mutual contacts.

We build with our own hands

Construction work on the construction of a turkey-hen is standard and corresponds to the construction of any premises for household purposes. Before starting work, you need to prepare a design project with all dimensions indicated. Then the building material is selected and the estimate is made. Then everything necessary for the construction is purchased and the instrument is being prepared.

The choice of material depends on the length of service life of the structure and the financial capacity of the poultry farmer. The following materials can be used for building turkey barns:

Wood is considered the most inexpensive and environmentally friendly material. In addition, for the construction of wooden structures do not require professional skills of a bricklayer and it can be made independently. The construction of brick or aerated concrete blocks is more durable, but it is being built slowly and requires experience.

When erecting a turkey hatchery, you will need the usual set of construction tools:

Interior work may require a hacksaw for wood, planer, chisel, pliers and nippers. To connect the wooden structures used nails, screws, screws and metal corner.

Work plan

All work on the construction of the house for turkeys is divided into several successive stages:

  • foundation laying,
  • walling,
  • roof installation
  • installation of doors and windows,
  • floor making
  • exterior and interior,
  • equipment installation,
  • construction of the aviary for walking.

It is better to start construction in late spring, when the ground dries out well and the weather is warm and sunny.

Step construction

The foundation of any capital construction is the foundation. For turkeys fit tape design. First, by the size of the structure, a trench with a width of 50 cm is dug out and a cushion of sand and gravel is laid. Then the formwork is mounted, which should be 15-20 cm above the ground level. If the structure is small, then a columnar foundation can be made. After the solution hardens completely, you can start building walls. For self-erection is best suited wooden frame construction.

On the foundation, on top of the ruberoid, the load-bearing beams from the profiled bar are laid. Next is going to frame the structure, with the help of metal fasteners. The walls on the frame are lined with clapboard, taking into account the door and window openings. The space between the inner and outer wall is filled with insulation. Mineral wool is commonly used for this purpose. Brick construction is erected in one row, also taking into account openings. Walls should be insulated with sheets of foam or extruded polystyrene. At installation of a roof vapor barrier keeps within a heater. The floor can be covered with boards or made of cement.

After completion of construction work, the finished structure should be thoroughly dried using an electric heater.

Floors and walls should be thoroughly cleaned with warm water, to which a 0.5% solution of bleach is added. Then you can carry out gas disinfection. To do this, you need to mix 40% formalin solution with potassium permanganate dissolved in water and leave the container with the liquid indoors for a while. Formaldehyde vapors will destroy all pathogens. Then the turkey must be ventilated.

What should be in the turkey

The following should be provided in the bird room:

  • perches,
  • feeding trough
  • water bowls for turkeys,
  • bath for swimming with sand and ash
  • lighting,
  • ventilation.

About the correct feeding of turkeys can be found in this material.

If turkeys are bred to get eggs and increase livestock, nests should be made for the hens.

Despite their simplicity, turkeys need comfortable conditions. In this case, they do not get sick, develop well and quickly gain weight. Microclimate is determined by several factors.

Duration of coverage is very important for the proper development of turkeys. They need a light day lasting 12-14 hours. In the summer, artificial lighting is not required, and in the fall and winter it is switched on daily, and at the same time. The optimum illumination is 10 watts per square meter.

Due to the unpleasant odor and corrosive substances excreted by faeces, the window is not enough for good ventilation of the room, therefore, should provide ventilation and exhaust ventilation. In a small turkey he can be organized from two asbestos-cement pipes passing through the roof of the room and located at different levels.

Adult turkeys are sufficiently resistant to low temperatures, however, the room for birds in the winter should be heated. For this purpose, an electric convector or an infrared film heater can be used. If the room is well insulated and has a small size, then the source of heat can be electric lighting lamps.

It is possible to warm a turkey hen various materials. The gap between the walls is filled with mineral wool. Foam polystyrene, foamed polystyrene and sheet foil insulation of the type “Penofol”, “Ekofol” or “Izover” are used for wall insulation.

As a litter can be used various organic ingredients. This is sawdust, straw or peat. First, a layer of lime should be placed on the floor, on which the litter is placed.

Place for poults

A place for turkeys should be provided in the house. Better if it is a separate small room. For the smallest chickens should be put broder.

Brooder is a box for the smallest turkeys, where special conditions are created that increase the survival of the offspring. It organized constant lighting and heating. The box also has a trough and watering bowl.

How to make

After the size of the enclosure is determined, wooden poles should be dug along the perimeter, between which horizontal logs are fastened. On them the grid the chain-link fastens. It is best to use a galvanized grid, as it does not rust and will last longer than usual. So that the birds could not penetrate the grid, the lower lags are packed parallel to the ground at a short distance from it. The height of the fence should be at least two meters, as the turkeys are good flyers. Some poultry farmers shield the net with a net even from above. This will eliminate the attack of birds of prey.

Video about turkey and its construction.

We start building the house with a foundation casting. When the foundation will stand a little, you should start building walls and roofs. The walls inside must be plastered with cement or clay. If you choose an expensive and warm option, just winter, you can make the frame walls, which are filled with insulation and sheathed with boards. The material for the roof can be - slate, tile or reed.

Arrangement of the house

Be sure to warm the floor with straw or sawdust bedding. A layer of insulation should be 10 cm in thickness. In more detail, it looks like insulation can be viewed on the photo or video. The size of the room should be calculated based on the number of birds. Two turkeys and a few heads of cubs fit on one square meter. After the foundation and walls are built, the arrangement of the turkey-hen begins. In the house you need to install windows. From the base of the ceiling, you should retreat 20 cm. It is necessary to make the lighting in the house immediately.

Please note that bulbs are placed at the rate of 5 W per 2 sq. M if the house contains adult turkeys and turkeys. 3W bulbs set for young turkeys. Above the bulb should be protected by a canopy, this achievement will help prevent the ingress of broken glass, if suddenly the bulb explodes.

Feeding troughs and perches

In order for turkeys to consume fodder more economically, you need to make the right feeders. Suitable material is wood. Feeders can be placed along the wall. To prevent the poults from walking around the food, a rotating bar is fixed above the feeders, which can be used as a handle to move. In the house of the poults should be put roost. Most often the perch is made of a small bar, and the top is rounded.

Perches gather all together and fasten to the wall, retreating from it by 25 cm. To be comfortable, it is recommended to install a box where the litter will fall under the perches. In order to properly build a turkey-hen and in the future to avoid non-joints in construction, it is necessary to draw up a detailed plan, calculate the cost of materials and agree on the construction.

General requirements for turkey breeders

Regardless of how you prepare the room for keeping the birds ready or from scratch, the mandatory requirements are imposed on it. In order for turkeys to grow and develop well, the room must have:

  • Dry and cool. Normal humidity for poultry is 65–70%. The optimum temperature depends on the time of year: in the winter - not less than -5 degrees and not more than -3 degrees, in the summer - from 18 to 20 degrees. Often the bird begins to hurt precisely at high humidity and high temperature.
  • Purely. Maintain cleanliness regularly. Particular importance should be given to litter - it should be fresh and dry. In winter, the litter is renewed with a new layer, and in spring and autumn it is changed.
  • Proper lighting. In addition to artificial light in the house should fall and natural.
  • Ventilation. It is necessary to think over and organize the ventilation system in order to periodically ventilate the air in the room.
  • No drafts.

In addition to the basic requirements, the correct maintenance of turkeys also provides for the installation of drinking bowls, feeders, perches, nests, and an open-air cage for summer walking.

How to build a turkey hen

It is believed that the most optimal construction option frame. Such a barn for turkeys can be quickly built with their own hands on the plot.

The frame is made of wooden timber, the outer and inner sides are sheathed with boards or sheets of OSB. An insulation of at least 10 cm in thickness is laid between the skin - this could be mineral wool, foam plastic, sawdust or other material. The whole structure is located on a reinforced concrete foundation. Between the lower timber and the foundation should be laid waterproofing, for example, of 2-3 layers of roofing material. After construction, all the cracks and joints on the outside should be replaced. It is not necessary to fill the capital foundation. As a rule, the structure for turkeys is simple and easy.

Power supply

If the bird is kept indoors all year round, then electricity is supplied to it. For lighting, lamps are used at the rate of 3 W per 1 square meter for poults and 5 W per 1 square meter. m. for adult birds. Lamps are suspended at a height of 1.5-1.7 m from the floor. Electrical cables should be placed at a distance inaccessible to turkeys. It is best to place cables in corrugated hoses for better protection against damage and ingress of moisture.

Walking, if possible, is located on the south side. The area is fenced around the perimeter and on top of the grid, the recommended height is 2 meters. From above the net should be necessary to avoid the attack of the bird of prey. Access to the poultry house walking is provided by manholes, which need to be supplied with doors. The size of such holes should be approximately 50x50 cm or more, depending on the size of the bird.

Windows, floors, ceilings

The windows in the house should consist of two frames and be located at a distance of 20 cm from the ceiling. The number of windows is selected in such a way that all the corners in the room are lit.

Floors in turkey poultry must be firm and level. Straw or sawdust is used as litter. The recommended thickness of the litter in turkey poults is 7-10 cm, in adult poultry - 25-30 cm.

Important! The litter is important especially in winter, because the main cold rises from the bottom and a layer of straw or sawdust will prevent this.

Turkey roosts

Turkey roosts
One of the main elements is the roost. To install choose the warmest side of the room. For roosts you can use planed bars or hewn poles. The surface is brought to a perfectly smooth state. Usually the perches are installed by a pyramid in several tiers - the first one at a distance of 80 cm from the floor, the uppermost one - 80 cm from the ceiling. The distance between the bars should be about 0, 5 m. Between the perch closest to the wall, you need to leave a distance of 25 cm.
