Schefflera - description and origin, photo
From a botanical point of view, a representative of the Araliaceae family forms three forms — a tree, a shrub, or a liana — depending on the species. Leaves similar to open palms painted in emerald tones make it especially attractive, and in some varieties there is also a variegated color - light green spots on a darker green background.
In the wild, exotic grows in the rain forests of tropical Southeast Asia, Australia and Oceania. Under natural conditions, its height reaches 40 m (trees), but at home it rarely exceeds the two-meter mark.
The flower was named after Jacob Christian Scheffler, the German botanist who described it. Although the maintenance of indoor varieties requires maintaining certain conditions, the plant is unpretentious and easily adapts to some deviations from the regime. In home gardening the most popular types are:
- Shefflera digitate - shefflera finger,
- Sh. actinophylla - W. luminaire (star leaf),
- Sh. octophylla - sh. eight-leaf, or "octopus",
- Sh. Arboricola - W. woody.
Particularly decorative varieties:
- Shefflera Bianka - Schefflera Bianca, leaf color is light emerald with cream wadding.
- Sh. Gemini - S. Gemini, on the emerald leaves stands a central strip of reddish hue.
- Sh. Gold Capella - Sh. Golden Capella - with lemon yellow specks on bright green leaf plates.
Schefflera breeding at home
A Scheffler's indoor flower can multiply in 4 ways: by seeds, cuttings, leaves, and air layering. All of them require increased attention and patience, since the process is often delayed for several months.
At home shefflera blooms very rarely. Even if this miracle happened, the seeds are rarely productive. Therefore, they are bought in flower shops. The optimal sowing time is midwinter, as seeds germinate slowly. In the spring, young shoots will receive a proper portion of heat and sun with a minimum of auxiliary means.
Method of growing from seed
Capacity take shallow, wide. A plastic food container is suitable, at the bottom of which holes are pierced to drain excess water. You can place each seed in a separate cup of 200 ml. The bottom of the tank lay out the drainage layer.
Substrate taken ready for palm trees or make up of turf soil, humus and sand (1: 1: 1). This mixture is suitable not only for seed germination, but also for rooting cuttings, leaves and cuttings. Peat mixed with sand in equal volumes can be used.
Before planting, seeds are soaked with warm water or Epin, Zircon solution, or home stimulants - aloe juice or honey water. Lovers Sheffler with experience do not recommend the use of Kornevin, Heterouaxin, Athlete, because Plants perceive these drugs negatively. Processing time 8-12 hours
The embedding depth is recommended - 2 sizes of seeds, seeds of tropical plants do not germinate well if they are deeply buried. Sown seeds are moistened with an atomizer. Planting container tighten food wrap or plastic wrap, you can cover with glass. The greenhouse is placed in a warm (20-24 ° C) place, it is possible on the radiator, placing a piece of plywood or thick cardboard under it - the seeds should be warm, but not excessively hot. Greenhouse air regularly, moisten the soil.
The first picking of the total capacity is carried out, when the seedlings have a second pair of true leaves, they are planted in pots or cups 5 cm in diameter. The pots are kept at a lower temperature - 18-20 °. The second time the seedlings are transplanted in a tank with a diameter of 8-10 cm, when the roots completely entwine the earth in a small cup. The required air temperature is 14-16 °. Care of seedlings and spiked seedlings carried out by the "adult" rules.
