General information

Growing petunias from seeds at home

When planting plants is very important to properly observe all steps. In our article we will describe how to dive petunia at home to grow a beautiful and healthy flower.

Picking process

First of all, it is worthwhile to figure out what a pick is. This process consists of a flower transplant, during which the root should be nipped. For the procedure usually use another container, but sometimes transplantation can be made in the same.

It is very important to adhere to the distance between the seedlings - it should be 3-5 cm. A pick is necessary to increase the area of nutrition of the root system. It helps to improve their formation. In order for the flower to please you with lush bushes, you should definitely pinch the top of the plant.

When to dive seedlings

Usually picking seedlings of petunias is carried out twice. The first time a transplant of petunia is carried out 3 weeks after planting seed. At this time, the plant should already have 2 or 3 leaves. If you carry out a transfer to separate containers, you will not have to pick a second time. But if the first time the procedure is carried out in the same capacity, in about 3-4 weeks you will have to plant the plant in different containers - perform the second pick.

How to do it right?

To pick the desired result, you need to very carefully conduct this event. Consider in more detail what it is.

For this event you will need:

  • disposable cups or other containers
  • prepared soil (prepared independently or purchased in a specialty store),
  • toothpicks,
  • sprayer and clean water.

All necessary materials should be prepared in advance so as not to be distracted by their search.

Process description

Petunia picking is a kind of care for the plant, which includes the following steps:

  • in the prepared containers (cups) should pour the ground,
  • then the earth is pressed down - this is necessary for its compaction,
  • the soil is sprinkled with water,
  • with the help of a toothpick, small cavities are made in the soil - the depth should be 1.5 cm, width - 2 cm,
  • in the pits gently insert the flower sprouts,
  • the holes are covered with earth.
The process itself does not present any particular difficulties, but requires special attention and accuracy.

Possible errors and precautions

The characteristics of petunia is its tenderness and fragility. To effectively conduct a picking, you will need a lot of patience. If errors are made in the process, it can lead to injury to the seedlings and further planting of flowers will be at risk.

We offer you to familiarize yourself with the important points that will help to avoid mistakes during this important event:

  • Do not use non-sterile primer. Flower sprouts are highly vulnerable, so it is very important that the soil in which they are transplanted does not contribute to the development of diseases.
  • Pay attention to the quality of watering. To ensure that the seedling survival process is painless, it is necessary to perform watering only with purified water. Perform the procedure is very careful not to pour sprouts.
  • Do not hurry. The rush and desire to quickly finish with the picking often leads to the fact that sprouts inadvertently spoil, and then use them for planting will no longer be possible.

If you want to grow a beautiful, delicate petunia, which will delight you with its pleasant flowering, it is worth taking a very responsible approach to its planting and care. Thanks to our article, you have learned what plant picking is, how to carry it out correctly, therefore, independently, without difficulty, you can perform this important procedure.

When to sow

In order for the plant to grow and delight you with wonderful flowers this summer, it is recommended to plant seeds for seedlings at the end of mid-March. Thus, in 12-13 weeks, the roots will fully grow stronger, the plant will mature, and in summer you will be able to plant a magnificent view of magnificently blooming petunias.

However, if the climate allows, and there is a desire to see the flowering of plants earlier, you can begin breeding with seeds in late January-early February.

Seed soil

To petunia pleased good growth and decorative flowering, it is necessary to grow in a nutritious, loose and light soil.

It is possible to purchase ready-made potions in the store: it already consists of the necessary components, is fertilized, cleaned and disinfected. However, when buying ready-made soil mixture, pay attention to the quality of peat: only lowland species is suitable for petunias. The fact is that high peat is characterized by high acidity, which is unacceptable for petunias.

If, however, you have acquired a sour soil, you can make it suitable for the plant by adding limestone or dolomite flour (1 tsp. Of the additive per liter of soil).

If you decide to make a soil mixture yourself, you will need the following components:

  • sod land - 2 parts,
  • lowland peat - 2 parts,
  • river coarse sand - 1 part.

It is necessary to take a good, clean ground: carefully remove all debris, including pebbles. After cleaning, calcine the soil in the oven or pour boiling water over it to get rid of harmful larvae and bacteria.

Before pouring the ground into the container, first lay a drainage layer on the bottom - this measure will ensure the absence of stagnation in the soil. The container is filled with soil in such a way that there is approximately 5-6 cm of empty space to the edges.

The choice of capacity for seedlings

As a container for seeds, it is better to choose plastic containers with opaque walls that will protect the seedlings from excessively active sunlight. In addition, you can buy in the store mini-greenhouses with interchangeable cassettes. In such a device, the seeds will sprout quickly and together. Also, planting can be made in special peat tablets - in this case, the substrate will not be needed.

Seed preparation and sowing

In the stores you can find planting material for petunia in two versions: either in bulk, or in pellets. The latter option most often means hybrid varieties: double, two-color, ampelous.

Granulated seeds are more expensive than loose, and in a bag you will find only 3-7 seeds. It is convenient for growing in vases, pots, pots. However, in order to cultivate a plant in flower beds, it is necessary to buy seeds in bulk.

Sowing is as follows (walkthrough):

  • Seeds or granules are laid out on a flat and cleaned pre-soil surface,
  • pressed into the ground (not too hard)
  • then spraying the soil from the sprayer,
  • on top of the container is covered with a film.

Important: to place the seeds from each other at a distance of 2-3 cm.

Growing seedlings in tablets

If sown in peat tablets, it greatly simplifies the process of growing seedlings of petunias. No need to "bother" with the preparation of the soil, and the shoots are more viable, friendly.

Tablets before planting are filled with hot water, then cooled. The measure allows loosening the peat, to make it a nutrient substance. To plant the seeds, they need to be taken with tweezers and placed in the pits of the tablet.

Experienced growers expensive hybrid varieties of petunias are grown exclusively in peat tablets. This measure eliminates the traumatic picks, helps the plants to form correctly, ensures their good growth and excellent health.

Growing seedlings in cassettes

This is also a convenient, moreover, a very economical option to get a seedling of petunias at home. A cassette with small cells is suitable for repeated use (as opposed to peat tablets), moreover, with this method of cultivation, seedlings will not require a traumatic picking. There is an opportunity to pick up cassettes with different number of cells.

For petunias, we recommend choosing such a cassette, in which the cells are large enough, but their height does not exceed 10 cm. The cells are filled with soil (preferably purchased). The procedure for growing and care is exactly the same as when seeding is carried out in a conventional container.

Conditions for germinating seeds

What external conditions are necessary for the petunia seeds to ensure that the seedlings are friendly, strong and fast: let's go through the main points step by step.

First, you should take care of the air temperature. The optimum temperature is + 20-22 degrees.

It is important and lighting. Since petunia is a tropical flower, it grows well only with abundant light. If the windows face north or it is cloudy, additional lighting should be arranged for the seedlings.

The ground in the container should be well moistened, however, moisture stagnation should not be allowed. Remove condensate that accumulates on the film in time.

When the seedlings will grow, you need to start taking care of their hardening. To do this, remove the lid from the container daily for 10 minutes. Over time, increase the hardening period of the seedlings, and the lid or film can be completely removed when the seedlings acquire the first leaves.

Important points regarding the care of petunia seedlings.

Consider that the seedlings of petunias are in dire need of a full and long-lasting illumination: otherwise, frail, weak, elongated shoots will turn out. You should not hope in our harsh climate for natural lighting, it is better to immediately provide additional artificial illumination of seedlings.

For lighting at home, it is better to use fluorescent or phytolamps. To turn on the artificial light, start, as soon as the seeds hatch. Note that the light should be lit over the seedlings at least 12 hours a day.

It is best to water the seedlings in the evening - at this time the plant adds more to the height. Use only soft water, warm and separated, without bleaching powder.

Sprout good and strong petunia bushes will not work without adding additional nutrition to the soil. The first time fertilizers are applied two weeks after the first pick. Then, additional nutrition to seedlings and adult plants should be provided every two weeks. It is best to use special complex mineral fertilizers with a high content of potassium as top dressing.

This procedure is made, only the shoots of petunias will acquire a pair of true leaves. Do not overtighten with a pick, as grown plants endure relocation more difficult. By the time of the procedure, the height of seedlings should reach 4-5 cm.

Dive shoots need from a common container in a separate container. Remove each seedling from the ground, and then pinch the spine with a sharp knife. We recommend to dive down the peeled saplings to the cotyledon leaves - this measure will help the seedlings not to stretch very high.

Immediately after transplantation, the seedlings are watered, and placed in a place with ambient lighting. To create such lighting, you can simply block a window with white paper for a day or two: such simple secrets are actually quite accessible. And if you do not want to mess around with picking, sow the seeds immediately in peat tablets or in cassettes.

The procedure allows you to achieve the perfect shape of a petunia bush. Thanks to a well-shaped bush, the inflorescences come together into a tight ball that looks especially decorative from the outside.

Agronomy cultivation of petunias recommends pinching the top of the plant. Pinch as soon as 4-5 leaves appear (not counting cotyledons). Growth restriction causes the expansion of the bush in breadth.

Pest and disease control

Petunia is rarely affected by pests, but it is not insured against diseases. The most dangerous and common plant disease is blackleg. This root rot, which leads to the complete death of the plant. To avoid contamination, it is necessary to thoroughly decontaminate the soil before planting, to air the seedlings, to avoid its overwetting.

Further care

Briefly consider how to care for an adult petunia.

The first step is to provide bright and long-lasting coverage of petunia throughout its growing season. This measure will provide a healthy and beautiful view of the plants, the brightness of the inflorescences.

In adulthood, petunia can tolerate a decrease in air temperature up to + 10-12 degrees. However, the optimum temperature for its cultivation is + 18 + 20 degrees. If you plan to plant a plant in the garden, start to harden the seedlings in advance: otherwise, the seedlings may not survive a sharp drop in temperature.

Feed adult petunia twice a month using complex fertilizers. If the flower does not grow well, add nitrogen supplements.

Do not over-wet the soil. If moisture is retained in the soil, it can lead to putrefactive plant diseases. Do not allow the ingress of water when watering the leaves and stems: water strictly under the root. After the appearance of the first buds and a set of sufficient green mass, reduce the amount of watering by about one third.

Be sure to loosen the soil after watering (but only the next day). Break the crust formed on the surface so that air can flow freely to the roots of the plant.

If the petunia has gone in height, make an additional pinching. Otherwise, the compact, beautiful shape of the bush will not work.

So, we learned how to grow petunia from seeds at home. Nothing particularly difficult, as you can see, if you follow the minimum and simple requirements, you will surely grow a wonderful flower with unique bright petals.

How to grow seedlings of petunias from seeds at home?

Petunia flowers will take root perfectly not only in summer garden beds, but also on window sills and balconies of an apartment.

This flower grows well on the sunny side, it is easy to get used to any type of soil, which allows gardeners to place seedlings in a variety of flower beds and greenhouses

Growing seedlings of petunias can easily be done even by experienced or novice gardeners.

Taking into account some of the rules of planting, you can get a delightful flower garden of petunias, which will please the master's eye for a long time and not require sophisticated watering and fertilizer schemes.

What are the best varieties of petunia seedlings to grow?

Most often, petunia is grown as an annual plant.

It reaches a height of 20 or 60 cm, growing out of a strong root system. Blossoming buds are usually large, with double petals ranging from white to maroon shades. Their diameter is 12-14 cm.

Popular varieties of petunias

The plant moved to us from South America, which ensures its increased endurance against high summer temperatures and cold colds.

Modern gardeners distinguish several groups of petunias:

  • bush,
  • for growing in hanging pots (amul),
  • with several flowers
  • low shrubs.

Any of these groups are planted in seedlings.

Bush varieties - the most popular group. It has the maximum number of varieties and color options, mixed with each other, with a smooth transition and color border.

Spray petunia

Spray petunia has such varieties:

Ampie (or spreading) - suitable for decorating the veranda or balcony.

Grades of ampelous petunia:

Dwarf (cascading) petunias reach a height of a maximum of 30 cm. Basically, they are grown in hanging pots or natural primer.

Varieties of cascade petunias:

  • Super cascade niagara
  • Double Cascade Plume Wayne,
  • Double Cascade Mix.

The most beautiful type of petunia is terry.

Terry Amelna Petunia

Popular varieties of terry petunias:

  • Angora,
  • Sonata,
  • Artist.
  • Multi-flowered shrubs are usually of small size, but very lush and bright flowering. Blooms usually very quickly and blooms for quite a long time.

These include:

  • Mirage,
  • Fantasy,
  • Duo Summer,

Additional varieties and their characteristics:

  • A mixture of colors (large flowering shrub, with a different color range of flowers with wavy petals).
  • Gottfried Michaels (neat shrub with raspberry buds).
  • Edelstein (light crimson flowers with darkened stripes on the petals. Bush about 50 cm with branchy foliage).
  • Cheti Tarte (hot pink shoots with uneven "torn" edges of the petals).
  • Rezito Blue (large violet buds with black stripes. A large number of medium-sized flowers grow on the bush).
  • Strawberry Tarte (bright scarlet flowers with pinkish edges of the petals).

To date, new mixed species of this beautiful flower have appeared.

When do they plant petunias on seedlings?

The deadline for planting petunia seeds depends on the region of its future production:

  • In Moscow it is the first decade of February to the first decade of March,
  • In Central Russia and Povolozhie - the first and second decade of February,
  • In Siberia and the Ural region - the first decade of March,
  • The southern regions of Russia and the Black Soil Region are the first decade of February.

Depending on the variety, the deadline for planting petunia seeds also differs:

  1. Ampel varieties sow on seedlings in early February,
  2. Dwarf in the second decade of February and the first decade of March.

For planting seedlings optimal to take seeds in the form of granules, because each grain in this case is “framed” into a special protective “cape” made up of various useful elements that increase the speed of seed ripening, feeding it, accelerating growth in the soil surface and protecting the grain from any kinds of diseases.

Selection of soil for seedlings of petunias

To sow the seeds of petunia is best in a mixture of soil from peat, turf, humus and sand in a ratio of 2: 2: 2: 1.

Or just buy in the store ready pochvosmes for seedlings. The main thing is that the soil is light, and it is desirable that perlite be added to its composition.

How to sow the seeds of petunia seedlings?

Start sowing is best with the onset of March, according to the lunar calendar.

The landing pattern is as follows:

  • You will need a plastic container for seedlings with a transparent lid or any other suitable container and glass filled with suitable soil. It must first be spilled with a solution of potassium permanganate and moistened well with water from a spray bottle.
  • Wait for the water to soak up and now sow the seeds superficially without sprinkling them with earth (THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. These seeds need light for germination.) Next, cover them with a transparent lid or glass plate so that natural moisture does not evaporate from the grains.
  • Now put the container with seeds of petunia in a well-lit place with a temperature of about 25 ° C, using regular sprays to maintain the level of soil moisture, ventilate and remove the accumulated condensate.
  • Under good conditions, seedlings should appear already approximately 10 days after sowing. After the seedlings appear, start gradually hardening the plants: reduce the temperature and periodically air.
  • Then, after about 30 days, it is possible to carry out a picking, i.e. Carefully move the young seedlings from the small box to the individual containers.

How to dive seedlings of petunias?

Technique picks Petunia this:

  1. Prepare containers for transplanting seedlings - these can be plastic cups or pots. Fill them with fresh and loose fertile soil, make a well and pour the mixture.
  2. Using wooden sticks, slightly loosen the soil in the containers with the seedlings, carefully pick up the appendix, and transfer it to the new cup, sprinkle with earth, compact and pour.
  3. Remember that petunias have a branched root system, so they are immediately transplanted into a fairly large container with the expectation that plants will grow in it for 3 months.
  4. 2 weeks after the picking, when the seedlings are strong, keep the plants at 15 ° C at night and 18-10 ° C during the day.
  5. Watering plants should be moderate, but often: petunia does not like either drought or excessive moisture.
  6. The first dressing of the petunias should be carried out 14 days after the picking. Dissolve a tablespoon of urea with a small amount of the chemical Agricola-7.

Features of the plant

The considered decorative culture has the form of a compact bush. Its height depends on the variety. If we consider stunted petunia, it grows to 20-30 cm, and larger specimens reach a height of 60 cm.

Distinguish petunia on the location of the stem upright and creeping. And although breeders are constantly expanding the range of petunias, but they are all divided into two types: spray and ampelous. The color of the flowers can be very different. The most common are:

Breeding methods

Reproduction of petunia occurs cuttings and seeds.. Two ways are popular, and each of them is characterized by its advantages and disadvantages. If it is petunia seeds, then they should be planted at the end of February to grow them for seedlings at home. The second breeding method is carried out at the end of winter or at the beginning of spring. To do this, cut a suitable cutting and plant in a mini greenhouse. They maintain a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius, and the earthen mixture should consist of peat, sand and sod land.

If there is excessive dampness, then it will destroy the cuttings until their rooting. Watering young sprouts is not worth it, it is better to moisten them with a spray. After 3-4 weeks, the cuttings are already rooted, so that they can be transplanted.

Petunia Description

Flower lovers appreciate petunias for their abundant flowering, which continues from the beginning of summer and ends only after the first autumn frosts. Grow these unpretentious plants in any climatic zones. They tolerate drought well, love light and can grow on poor soils.

Data on the number of petunia species that exist in nature is not straightforward, according to some sources there are about 15, and on others up to 40. The first cultivated plants of the petunia genus appeared in the XVIII century. The main characteristics of these plants:

  • stem upright or creeping with shoots of 2.3 order,
  • shoots present on the shoots,
  • the color of the shoots is green, rounded shape,
  • the leaves are of different size and shape, alternate, have pubescence,
  • The flowers have a double perianth, which consists of a corolla and calyx,
  • flowers of two types terry and simple,
  • the fruit is in the form of a bivalve box, which splits when the seeds ripen,
  • seed size is small.

Petunia species

Among gardeners there is no consensus on the classification of petunias. Usually this type of ornamental plants is divided according to the following characteristics:

  • bush form,
  • flower size and type of flowering.

The shape of the bush

Depending on the shape of the bush, there are varieties of petunias: bush, cascade, ampelous. Consider what are the bush species of petunias. They are stunted, compact, with upright shoots up to 30 cm in length and tall species with sprawling shoots from 50 to 75 cm long. The bush-type varieties and hybrids do not need to be formed. To simulate the growth of lateral shoots, you just need to pinch the growth point.

Ampel group of petunias unites plants with long shoots from 50 to 150 cm long. For them it is characteristic:

  • the rapid growth of shoots
  • long and abundant flowering,
  • resistance to adverse weather conditions.

Ampel varieties of petunias look good in hanging pots. Landscape designers use this type of flower with thin, long whips for vertical gardening. Practice landing of ampelous petunias in the ground to produce bright floral carpets.

Cascade petunias have thicker shoots that are shorter than ampel varieties. They grow to the top, only descend downwards when they reach a certain length. Varieties and hybrids of cascade petunias are used to decorate loggias and balconies. Their seedlings are planted in boxes, pots, pots.

Small flowers

The group of small-flowered petunias Milliflor unites plants with a diameter of flowers from 2.5 to 3 cm. This species is distinguished by abundant flowering, rain does not affect their decorative effect. Bushes are formed from numerous branched shoots up to 0.9 m long and upright stems in height not exceeding 25 cm.

Florists use to create floral compositions varieties:

  • Pink F1,
  • Yellow duckling F1,
  • Picobella (series).

Petunia Picobella Cascade (Salmon / Salmon)

Large-flowered forms do not tolerate difficult weather conditions. The flowers of these forms are very decorative, but the number of flowers on the bushes is less than that of small-flowered species. Among flower growers, the large-flowered group of petunias, Grandiflora, is popular.

It combines low-growing varieties with a stem height from 25 to 35 cm and tall ones with a length of shoots from 50 to 70 cm. The flowers are large, of various forms: simple funnel-shaped, double. The diameter of the flowers can range from 8 to 13 cm. Petals of flowers with solid, wavy or corrugated edges.

Popular varieties of large-flowered petunias:

  • Double Cascade F1,
  • Galaxy F1,
  • Black velvet,
  • F1 ball,
  • Sophis F

Abundantly blooming

Floribunda is a group of hybrids and varieties that unites richly blooming petunias. The height of erect, branched shoots is from 25 to 45 cm. The flowers are simple funnel-shaped or terry diameters from 6 to 10 cm. This type of petunias is used in the decoration of flower beds and borders. Popular varieties of petunias Floribunda:

  • Sonya F1
  • Milky Way F1
  • Angora F1

Multiflora group of multi-flowered petunias consists of short, compact plants, abundantly covered with flowers. The height of the bushes does not exceed 25 cm. The shape of the flowers is different - from simple to terry, the diameter of which does not exceed 5 cm. The flowering of many-flowered petunias is early and long-lasting. Plants of this group are used in the design of flower beds, balconies, grown in room conditions on window sills.

Common varieties among gardeners:

  • Celebrity F1,
  • Pikoti F1,
  • Glafira.

When to plant petunia seeds for seedlings

The timing of planting petunias for seedlings depends on when they are planning flowering. If you need to get a flowering plant at the end of spring, then you need to sow seeds for seedlings in January. For summer flowering, sowing begins in mid-February and continues until the third decade of March.

To get a full seedling, you need at least 3 months. The ammune varieties of petunias begin to sow earlier than other species, since it takes longer to form long shoots.

Sowing seeds for seedlings

Beginning gardeners may be puzzled by a very small seed size. We need certain skills to work with them. There are seeds on sale. They sow easier and the shell protects the seeds from all sorts of infections, in addition it contains nutrients. Petunia seeds remain viable for 4 years.

Land preparation

Experienced gardeners have long determined the composition of the soil, the most suitable for growing petunia seedlings. Soils are suitable for it:

  • sand and loam,
  • loamy,
  • clay and sand.

Many growers practice mixing several types of purchased soil. Since they believe that one type of soil may not fit petunias, and a mixture of soils from 2-3 manufacturers will be optimal in structure and fertility.

If the soil in the garden is acidic, it is limed or humic fertilizers, organic or nitrates are added. To reduce the acidity by adding sandy or sod land. Peat is added to strongly alkaline soil, and to moderately alkaline compost or sphagnum. The structure of heavy, clay soil is corrected by adding peat and sand.

As for the soil for seedlings, many gardeners prefer to germinate seeds in peat tablets. Those who use land for sowing, carry out a number of measures for its disinfection:

  • to protect against diseases, they spill a pink solution of potassium permanganate, it is necessary to water it at least a week before planting,
  • The second disinfection option is 1 hour in an oven heated to 150 ° C.

For those who want to compose the soil on their own, advice from gardeners can help, who recommend the following variants of soil mixtures for seedlings:

  • clay 30% and 70% peat,
  • peat 1 part, sand 1 part, loam 2 parts,
  • peat 1 part, loam 1 part.

For petunias, both high and lowland peat can be used. Instead of loam, you can add perlite or fir bark. At 1 liter of soil is to add 1 tsp of dolomite flour to normalize the acidity.

Not everyone knows how to sow small petunia seeds correctly. The main thing to remember is that the seeds are sown on the surface and not sprinkled with earth or humus. Small seeds are not visible on the surface of the earth, sowing is difficult.

The process will be much easier if a layer of snow is poured over the ground. On a white background, the seeds are easy to distribute at the right distance from each other. You can stick them with a toothpick. After all the seeds are laid out, planting containers need to tighten food cling film, put in a warm place.

Seedling care

Petunia shoots are so small that it is difficult to imagine how to care for her. Any wrong move can destroy tender plants. Failures occur in beginning flower growers, experienced florists rarely fail, because they know exactly what petunias need at every stage of development.

Miniature seedlings watered difficult, but necessary and often enough. Drying the top layer of soil leads to its death. For accurate watering under the root flower growers use various tools:

  • syringes
  • small enemas
  • screw the detail of a ballpoint pen into a plastic bottle tire.

At first, water is watered often and gradually so that the surface of the earth is constantly wet. As the seedlings grow, the frequency of watering decreases, but the volume increases.

Light is needed for the normal development of seedlings. The first two weeks it can be done almost 24 hours. When sowing seeds in March, such a long illumination is not needed. Enough to provide seedlings 12 hour light day.

For dostochivaniya seedlings of petunias use lamps:

  • gas discharge,
  • fluorescent,
  • LED.

You can turn on the lamp in the morning at 7 o'clock and turn it off at 9 in the evening. This lighting will be enough to grow strong seedlings.

Sampling of seedlings of petunias is not an obligatory procedure if the plants are planted in separate cups. When sowing in a common container, a pick is necessary, since it contributes to the formation of the root system first, and then the aboveground part of the flower.

Transplantation (picking) of seedlings of petunia can be carried out several times. The first time in the phase of 3-4 true leaves. By the time it is about 2 weeks after germination. With the help of picks regulate the planting density of seedlings. You can dive into a larger box or in separate cups with a diameter of 6 to 8 cm.

In order not to damage the delicate roots of small seedlings, it is necessary to water the soil before picking. Some flower growers, when transplanting seedlings, disinfect roots and immerse them for a few seconds in a weak solution of potassium permanganate. After transplantation, the seedlings need to be watered, the ground after watering tightly clings to the roots.

In order for the bushes of petunias to be lush, pinch the central stem. After that, the plant has new growth points, the active formation of new shoots begins. The flowering period is postponed, but the largest flowers are formed on lateral stems.

A month later, you can pinch the already formed side shoots. It is allowed to form bushes during the whole season, if it is necessary to maintain the decorativeness of the plant. Elite varieties rarely need to form. Simple varieties of petunias need pinching and pinching lateral shoots.

Epin stimulates growth. Perlite loosens the soil. Uniflor provides plants with trace elements. It is difficult to buy powder, it is sludge, which improves seed germination. Hydrogel helps control soil moisture and improves seed germination.

The stock of nutrients in the soil is enough for the first time. Nursery seedlings need to be fed with nitrogenous fertilizer, the time of the first feeding comes 2-3 weeks after germination. The next feeding to spend in 2 weeks. Potassium and phosphorus should prevail in the fertilizer.

In peat tablets

Peat tablets can be purchased at any supermarket. The seeding procedure is simple:

  • the tablets are first soaked in water
  • after they increase in size, they are placed in a box (container) with sides of at least 4 cm,
  • the seeds are put into the indentations on the tablet,
  • the box is covered with foil.

In a week, shoots appear. Before they appear, tablets must be moistened.

In pots, in pots

To decorate the balcony or loggia, petunias are sown immediately in a pot or in a flowerpots. The success of lush flowering will depend on the correct soil mix. For decorative purposes, petunias of different types (bush, ampelous) are planted in one container and complement them with other colors: alissum, lobelia. To keep the soil in the pots wet, a hydrogel or vermiculite is added to the soil.

Transplanting petunias to a permanent place

Replanting petunia seedlings to a permanent place is not difficult. The soil must be prepared and treated with a fungicide in advance, preferably in the fall. A good time for a transplant will be a cloudy day or not a hot evening.

Transfer plants should be carried out carefully, without damaging the root system. Roots straighten, not allowing bends. Land after transplanting is good to water. Water should not fall on the leaves. To maintain a constant soil moisture, use mulch:

  • decorative bark,
  • sawdust,
  • peat,
  • humus.

Petunia care in summer

Petunia is grown in a pot or in the soil. Summer care depends on the method of cultivation. Petunia growing in the soil does not require frequent watering, it is enough to water the flowers once a week. Petunias growing in pots need frequent watering. On hot days, potted flowers can be watered twice a day, morning and evening.

Petunias respond well to fertilizers with a high content of potassium. Feeding can be carried out throughout the summer season until the end of flowering. Recommend alternate mineral fertilizers with organic. Faded flowers should be removed, especially for ampel varieties and petunias grown in pots and containers.

What to do for lush flowering

Experienced growers are seeking from their lovers lush flowering. Novice florists can do it too. Receptions are simple:

  • pinching of the central stem of the seedling,
  • pinching the tops of the side shoots
  • regular watering,
  • удаление увядших цветов,
  • подкормки.

Diseases and pests

When a tobacco mosaic virus is infected, the plant becomes shallow, its edges of the leaf plates turn to the top and become covered with necrotic spots. Dots or touches of white or gray are visible on the flower petals. Plants infected with viruses are destroyed.

From insects to petunia attacks aphid. Symptoms:

  • young shoots turn yellow, are deformed,
  • on the leaves it is easy to consider adult aphids,
  • Ants scurry around the infected bush.

Pull with the treatment of an infected flower is not worth it. Any gardener must have insecticides: Aktara, Fufanon, Karate. Several treatments and the bush will get a healthy look.

Why seedlings turn yellow

Yellow leaves on the seedlings of petunias may indicate a lack of iron. To get rid of the flower of chlorosis, you can use iron chelate. Florists prefer to use Ferovit - a liquid form of iron chelate. To return the plants to a healthy look, 4 treatments are enough.

Conduct feeding once every 5 days. Fertilizers are applied both under the root and spraying on the sheet. Greater effect is achieved with the alternation of root and foliar dressings. Petunia responds well to the introduction of potassium monophosphate.

Why leaves curl

The rolled leaves of petunia - a sign of poor care for a young plant. The reasons may be different:

  • waterlogging,
  • overdrying of soil
  • dry air
  • increased acidity of the soil,
  • excess nitrogen
  • phosphorus deficiency,
  • lack of sunlight
  • viral disease or pest invasion.

Why is growing poorly

Seedlings grow poorly and languishes due to insufficient lighting. To eliminate the cause of poor growth, you can change the place of residence of the seedlings, move to the south or south-west window. Alternatively, install a lamp for additional lighting of seedlings.

Another reason for stopping the growth of a plant is the insufficient volume of the pot. The roots filled the entire volume and they have nowhere else to develop. This reason is eliminated by transferring the plant to a new, larger container. After transplantation, the flower can be treated with a growth stimulator.
