How to grow fragrant tobacco from seeds at home When to plant seedlings Planting and care

There are plants that can decorate any area or home collection of flowers.

Fragrant fragrant tobacco - one of these species. Consider how to grow it yourself.

Sweet Tobacco: Short Description

There is a plant from South America. In nature and warm regions is a perennial, but as an ornamental plant in temperate latitudes only one season blooms. It belongs to the family Pasanova.

Branched erect stem on average reaches 80 cm in height. Depending on the variety and growing conditions, this figure can vary from 0.3 to 1.5 m. The leaves of the plant are large (the basal leaves have a rounded shape, whereas the stem leaves are longer). The average size of the flowers is 6-8 cm. They are distinguished by their star shape, and the tube is rather long. The most common color is white, but there are varieties with yellow, pale green and red colors of different shades.

Tobacco scented love for the smell, exudes when it blooms. In the flowering period (from June to October) flowers bloom in the darkfilling the air with a delicate scent. In light hours the plant "closes". This does not apply to hybrid varieties of red - they are constantly revealed during this period, but they do not smell. White flowers, on the contrary, give the most powerful scent.

Popular among domestic flower growers are the varieties "Winged", "Green Light", "Maju Noir", "Aroma Green". Of the hybrids prefer tall (from 80 cm) line "Jingle Bell" and "Dolce Vita".

Timing and seed preparation

Suppose we are ready to take on fragrant tobacco, more precisely for its cultivation from seed, but when to plant this plant?

For a given culture, the usual time is March, April. Some gardeners sow in the last decade of February. This is also permissible, but only providing all the conditions for full growth and appropriate care.

The seeds of fragrant tobacco are very small (almost 7,000 of them per 1 g). The handling of such material is simple: many dry seeds are placed in the ground. You can also pre (for a day or two before sowing) put them in warm water, throwing a couple of potassium nitrate crystals there. Such measures will stimulate growth.

Soil for growing seedlings

Before sowing fragrant tobacco, look at the soil. The soil must be nutritious. “Store” substrates will do, but you can treat the soil yourself from the site (ignited for disinfection). For better drainage, add some sand (no more than 1/3 of the total volume), which loosens the layer.

Immediately before planting the soil is moistened.

Sowing seeds for seedlings

As already mentioned, the seed material is very small, which is why accuracy is important when working. The process of sowing fragrant tobacco looks like this:

  • the seeds are spread evenly over the entire surface of the soil,
  • pips slightly pressed into the soil (maximum depth - 5 mm),
  • after that the crops are not covered with earth,
  • The pot or box is covered with a transparent film or a lid and placed in a place with a constant temperature of +20 ° C.

Conditions for germinating seeds

Thermophilic culture described not easy to tolerate drought. Therefore, the first task in its cultivation is to provide a suitable light and irrigation regimes. For the first two weeks after sowing, leave the pot covered with foil. If you put it on the sunny side, moisture will be regulated without much intervention. Top dressing and capital watering at this time are not carried out. Another thing - the cultivation of fragrant tobacco from seeds in cold regions. As with the early planting, additional lighting and watering may be needed.

The phytolamp will perfectly cope with the first item, although luminescent old models will also fit. As for watering, it is done only spray gun (no watering cans), which will not give a big pressure and will not wash immature seeds.

Seedling care

On the second or third week after planting shoots appear. To strengthen them you need:

  • remove the coating
  • slightly reduce the temperature (usually the pot is simply transferred to another room),
  • conduct moderate watering (at this stage it is impossible to over-wet the soil),
  • reduce the light intensity, as the shoots differ in their resistance to shade.

Of course, on a plot with young shoots there should not be any weeds. This is true for plants sown in greenhouses.

After this, sowing of fragrant tobacco on the seedlings proceeds to the next stage and we are preparing for a picking.

Pickling seedlings

Around the 20th day, the first leaves unfold. When they are already two or three in one run, they make picking. This procedure is familiar to all gardeners:

  • Half an hour before the picking, the tobacco is watered to soften the old soil.
  • Holding the plant by the leaves, it is undermined by a small shovel. Grasping the fragile stem is undesirable.
  • After the flower is extracted, the main rhizome is carefully pruned by about a third.
  • In the new pot make a small hole. The recess should not exceed 5 mm from the so-called growth point (this is a seal that is visible slightly above the rhizomes).
  • Seedlings sprinkled, slightly clamping the layer of soil itself.

After such an operation should moderate watering the plant at room temperature. Fertilizing in the next week do not, the seedlings so far must germinate in a new place without recharge.

Note that right after the picking, fragrant tobacco suffers a little shock, and such a landing, as well as care, requires some skills.

Transferring new packaging to heavily shaded places is not particularly desirable; after all, it can be harmful to heat-loving shoots. It is important not to miss the moment of growth, that is, not to wait until the seedlings are thorough strengthened. Yes, they are fragile, but at the same time adapt faster (do not tighten the pick). Often when transplanting plants disinfect. For hybrid varieties, this is mandatory, because young seedlings cannot fight bacteria themselves. A weak solution of potassium permanganate (1 ml of product is dripping per liter of water) will prevent the appearance of rot and fungi on the roots.

Plants can be tempered by carrying out on a balcony or an open veranda.

Timing and location selection

Very often, plants are planted in open ground, making sure that there is no further frost. But in fact this is not enough, because the soil should still warm up. For most of the varieties we have, the best time for such a planting will be the end of May – the first days of June.

The soil itself must be fertilized. Saline and “heavy” soils are excluded. Tobacco neighbors in the area can be any garden crops. There are no requirements for “predecessors” either.

Plants at this point should have a fairly powerful (0.5 cm) stem.

Thinking where to plant fragrant tobacco in the garden, look at the half-shaded locations. Permanent sun flower is undesirable (it closes faster and generally fades).

Scheme and process of landing

Everything is simple here:

  • Seedlings stop watering for 2-3 days before transplantation.
  • A couple of hours before the "relocation" plants abundantly moisturize.
  • Carefully removing the seedlings from the pot, it is placed in a moist well (pour about 0.5 liters of water).
  • In the center of the hole make a groove, where the plant is placed. The distance between adjacent seedlings should be in the range of 25-30 cm.
  • Roots sprinkle with wet soil and crush a new layer, after which dry soil is laid on top. This way you can retain moisture.

It is noticed that tobacco easily endures planting even during the flowering period.

Regular watering

Open ground normal watering interval is one week. For southern regions with arid climate, the periodicity will be more “dense” - the ground should not shatter.

Already flowering plant does not require frequent watering. In this regard, tobacco is ideal for giving, because the flower endures a lack of watering, although you should not abuse it.

Weed control and soil loosening

No different from the same works with other cultures. Weeds are best removed immediately after watering in order to pull them out with the roots. With a dry soil make weeding. If there was wheat grass on the plot, you will have to dig up and remove its roots before planting. Of course, it is long, but effective.

Chemistry that infects weeds is harmful to surrounding plants and is used in extreme cases.

Loosening is good to do after each watering or rain: the soil must breathe, like rhizomes.

Top dressing done 3-4 times per season. Pros know that it is impossible to get involved in nitrogen drugs alone. They increase green mass and leaves, but not flowers. Otherwise, the same fertilizers are used as for other garden flowers. Suitable potassium compounds - potassium magnesia and potassium sulfate. Superphosphate in the form of granules is also nothing. Chloride compounds are contraindicated.

After this treatment, you can collect seeds in reserve in August. They are placed in a dry, cool place.

Disease and Pest Resistance

Considering how to grow flowers in the case of such a plant as fragrant tobacco, we note its resistance to all sorts of sores. This view is phytoncide, that is, it can repel pests not only from itself, but also from growing crops.

Unfortunately, no disease is complete. For example, you should remember the powdery mildew that affects the leaves of the plant. On the outer side of the sheet there are vague spots (occasionally with a border), which eventually merge into one large hearth. Leaves can curl and fall off. Flowers are also deformed.

With this disease struggling such means:

  • Brewing ash (2-3 liters of boiling water add 0.5 ash and stir, after which the composition is poured into a 10-liter container, diluted with cold water).
  • Garlic decoction. For 10 liters of water take 75 g of minced garlic and bring the mixture to a boil. After cooling, the plants are sprayed.
  • Iodine milk: 9 liters of water / 1 liter of skim milk plus 10 drops of 5% iodine.

Diseases like root rot, bacterial ryabuhs and fungus can disturb the flower only when the neighboring flowers are very contagious, and tobacco itself can cope with them.

The same story with pests. When planting in the open land, young plants are often attacked by an earthen flea. It is eliminated by sprinkling the plant with ashes (several times per season). Occasionally starved Colorado beetles appear, which must be manually crushed. Aphids do not tolerate ammonia, but you need to be very careful with them: because of the nitrogen base, large doses of this agent are undesirable for flowers.

We hope we have completely answered the question of how to plant fragrant tobacco, and its fragrant flowers will delight you in summer evenings.

When does fragrant tobacco bloom?

Plant blooms all summer, bravely endures the first autumn frosts.

Inflorescences resemble bindweed or ipomoea: long tubes with stellate limb. The diameter of the corolla is 6-8 cm. The colors are bright: snow-white, pink, crimson, red, the breeders displayed forms with a yellow and greenish tint.

Lush flowering is accompanied by an enchanting scent - in sweetness it can compete with night violet. In the daytime, the corollas of fragrant tobacco are covered, and with the onset of the evening they open up, towering a fragrant cloud above the bush. They create a romantic mood, will be a bright decoration of your garden.

Growing fragrant tobacco from seeds at home

Seeds of fragrant tobacco photo

The plant has abundant self-seeding, but after snowless frost winters the seeds do not always germinate, the sprouts are weak. In the open ground, fragrant tobacco seeds are sown only with the establishment of real heat (not earlier than May). From the point of view of flowering productivity, this is not the best way. Growing through seedlings can rightly be called the most reliable option.

When sow fragrant tobacco?

Fragrant tobacco growing from seed when planted

Sow seeds of fragrant tobacco in March. You will need flat containers with nutrient soil mixture (in equal proportions humus, peat, garden soil).

  • The seeds are very small: they should be gently spread over the surface of the earth, lightly sprinkled with earth, then sprayed from a melodious disperser.
  • To create a greenhouse effect from above, cover with glass or transparent oilcloth.
  • The air temperature should be maintained between 18-22 ° C.
  • Friendly shoots will appear after 1.5-2 weeks.
  • During this time, do not forget to air the greenhouse, maintain moderate soil moisture.
  • Remove the shelter as soon as the first shoots appear, the air temperature should be lowered to the 16 ° C mark, provide bright but diffused illumination.

Overmoistening of the soil is fraught with the development of root rot (black leg). Water sparingly, water gently.

After sprouting of two true leaves, they should be seated in separate containers or broken less often, leaving 3-4 cm between plants. When transplanting, try to capture the root along with the former clod of earth. To stimulate tillering, pinch the tops over the 5-6 leaf.

Transplantation in open ground (do this with the establishment of this heat) should precede the two-week hardening of seedlings. First, take the plants to fresh air for 1 hour, gradually increasing the length of time until the seedlings can stay in the garden all day.

Replace with the method of transshipment earthen coma. Between individual bushes keep a distance of 20-30 cm, for tall varieties - 80 cm-1 m.

Dig a site beforehand. If the soil is poor, for 1-2 weeks before planting, dig a little humus or compost. Do not overdo it with fertilizers (excess nitrogen can be disastrous).

Place for growing fragrant tobacco

The fragrant tobacco to the growing conditions is not picky, will please spectacular flowering in different, even contradictory conditions. He received the title of Letnika, capable of growing almost anywhere. It easily adapts to bright sunshine: even on the south side of the rock garden, rock aria, flower beds will look fresh. But the preferred location in a slight shading. It grows well on cultivated garden soil.

Care for fragrant tobacco in the open field

The fragrance is moisture-loving. In order for the bushes to successfully develop and bloom (especially under bright lighting), it will require regular and abundant watering. Avoid periods of prolonged drought. Focus on precipitation. The soil should be kept slightly wet. It is preferable to conduct watering in the morning or evening.

In frequent dressing does not need. Enough to feed a couple of times per season (during budding and early flowering). Add a standard dose of complete mineral fertilizer (for flowering crops or nitrophoska) along with irrigation. This contributes to abundant lush bloom.

Removal of dead buds

As a rule, faded inflorescences do not affect the formation of new buds, flowering lasts tirelessly. But dry corollas spoil the decorative look, the bush looks neglected, especially when placed in the foreground. It is to maintain the tidiness of appearance that they should be removed in a timely manner.

Fragrant tobacco: description. A photo

Fragrant tobacco is a herbaceous plant of a decorative type, belonging to the genus Tobacco and the Solanaceae family. It is also called Tobacco Sander (Nicotiana × sanderae) or Mrs. Sander Tobacco. In the people, this plant is often called garden tobacco.

Homeland fragrant flower is the southern edge of America, and in the European latitude, this bright shrub came through Christopher Columbus. In the wild, the plant is a perennial. In our latitudes, the flower, as a rule, grows only one year, this is due to the lack of heat. However, the experience of growing a fragrant handsome shows that with a strong desire, you can extend the life of his "life" for several years.

The bush has erect stems with large leaves and flowers of small size. Leaflets at the bottom of the stem have a rounded shape, and closer to the top is elongated.

Flowers are collected in racemes. In their form, they resemble stars and can have a variety of colors: from white to saturated red. For wild specimens only white color is characteristic. Each flower has an elongated tubule. The size of the stars is between six and eight centimeters in diameter.

Sweet tobacco begins to delight the owners with colorful flowers in the middle of the first summer month. With proper care, flowering continues until mid-fall.

A characteristic obliquity of the Nicotiana × sanderae is that the flower opens and begins to smell only in the evening hours. To date, hybrid varieties are bred that do not close during the daytime. These bushes have bright stars of saturated colors. The downside of most hybrid varieties is the lack of flavor.

Popular varieties

Currently, many varieties of aromatic shrubs are bred. Their main difference is the color of flowers and the height of the stem. Among the most popular varieties of Nicotiana × sanderae should be noted:

  1. Sunny bunny. The stalk reaches a height of up to eighty centimeters. The stars have a bright yellow color.
  2. Night bonfire. This variety is characterized by shrubs up to sixty centimeters, covered with bright crimson flowers. The latter open not only in the evenings, but also in case of cloudy weather.
  3. "Ringing bell." Attention! For representatives of this variety is characterized by unusually high "growth" - about ninety centimeters. Asterisks painted in delicate pink tones.
  4. Purple Haze. In accordance with the name of the flowers have lilac shades. Shrubs grow from sixty to seventy five centimeters high.
  5. Green light. Representatives of this variety have a "height" to fifty centimeters. For flowers characteristic bright lemon (gentle lime) color.
  6. Winged. This variety is characterized by a variety of colors and a very rich aroma.
  7. Aroma Green. The representatives of this class of stars painted in an unusual green color. A tall plant - up to one meter.
  8. Enjoyment A feature of this interspecific hybrid is a high resistance to diseases. Shrubs grow tall, richly strewn with flowers.
  9. Maju Noir. The shrubs of this variety have the most luxurious scent. Flowers have a snow-white color.
  10. Dolce Vita F1. Attention! This hybrid variety is characterized by a variety of colors and a pleasant aroma. In this case, the flowers do not close in daylight.

Growing fragrant tobacco seedlings from seed

Heat is a prerequisite for the cultivation of a beautiful bright shrub. For this reason, sowing seeds directly in open ground is ineffective. If you want to have healthy and beautiful specimens of Nicotiana × sanderae, it is advisable to propagate them through seedlings.

Preparation for planting begins with a successful selection of seed. It is necessary to pay attention not only to the external characteristics of the variety and the characteristics of its cultivation, but also to the reputation of the producer.

Important! For growing seedlings Nicotiana × sanderae preferably sown in late winter or early March. Competent planting of fragrant tobacco from seeds to seedlings is reduced to performing the following successive operations:

  1. Seeds are pre-soaked, wrapped in a piece of wet gauze. This procedure will significantly increase the germination of crops. Seed swelling indicates their readiness for sowing.
  2. Prepare the tank for seeding. Ideal for a flat, shallow bowl. We prepare the soil by mixing three components: garden soil, humus and peat, or use ready-made commercial mixture.
  3. We scatter seeds on the soil surface. Seed Nicotiana × sanderae is very small, so you should not bury it in the ground. Carefully moisten crops with a spray gun.
  4. Create seedlings greenhouse effect with the help of glass or regular cellophane. We interfere with the capacity of crops in a room with a temperature of at least twenty degrees Celsius. Every two days, water the "kids."
  5. We remove a teplichka as soon as the first shoots appeared. This will happen approximately a couple of weeks after sowing.
  6. When the second leaves appear, we dive “kids” into separate small containers, you can cups. We feed up young plants for the best growth.

We slightly lower the temperature at the site where the tanks with young shrubs are located.

When planting seedlings in open ground

First of all, it is necessary to decide when to plant fragrant tobacco. Seed garden handsome can be planted in open ground, provided that the earth had time to warm up well. The most favorable period is the middle of the last spring month.

When planting, it is important to keep a distance between shrubs of at least twenty, and preferably thirty centimeters, to give them the opportunity to fully develop.

How to sow seeds in open ground

If you decide to grow Nicotiana × sanderae by sowing seeds directly into the ground, then this procedure should be carried out in late winter or early spring. At the same time, before the onset of heat, seedlings should be carefully covered. However, floricultural experience shows that cultivation of fragrant shrubs in this way is ineffective.

Care: basic rules

The soil. Ornamental representatives of the Tobacco are not particularly fastidious about the soil in which they grow. However, the plant has quite large leaves, and they need a lot of moisture. That is why a well-drained and moist soil is necessary for good growth. For the plant is perfect land with moderate fertility.

Watering. Regular watering is an indispensable prerequisite for Nicotiana × sanderae for good growth. Indeed, for the places of its natural growth is characterized by high humidity. In the peak of the summer heat and when the weather is arid, the fragrant beauty should be watered daily.

Fertilizer. For better growth, shrubs recommend periodically feeding. It is important in this matter to use nitrogen fertilizers sparingly. An excess of nitrogen can lead to the fact that not the buds will develop, but the deciduous part of the shrub.

Lighting. For optimal growth of fragrant shrubs, an ideal place is appropriate for the following conditions:

  • good light,
  • no scorching sun
  • protection from strong winds.

Most varieties of fragrant tobacco blooms from June to September. If you want to extend the flowering period, then regularly cut off dried flowers. And then the bright bush will delight you with its flowering until late autumn.

Wintering at home

If you want to extend the "life" of your garden pet, then experienced flower growers are advised to do the following:

  1. In the last days of autumn we carefully dig up an adult bush.
  2. Transplant the plant into a pot of suitable size and place it on the window sill, which is well lit.
  3. The green part of the shrub pruned about thirty percent.
  4. Water the flower, focusing on dry soil.
  5. With the onset of spring, you must plant fragrant tobacco in the open ground.

Peculiarities of fragrant tobacco

Herbal flowering plant fragrant tobacco is a member of the family Solanaceae. The height of the bush can vary from 0.2 to 0.9 m. The shoots are erect, the leafy plates are large, and the small flowers have a stellate shape. On the surface of the whole bush there are glandular hairs. The color of flowers depends on the type and variety and can be white, red, yellow, crimson or pink. It is noteworthy that the flowers with a pale color, are more zapashistymi. As a rule, the disclosure of the flowers of such a plant is observed immediately after sunset in the evening. This plant blooms in June, and blooms in September. In the evening, the aroma of flowers becomes even stronger. Cultivated since 1867

Cultivation and care in the open field

Fragrant tobacco is a simple and unpretentious crop, but in order to keep the bushes strong, the leaves are juicy and the flowers are rich and bright, plant the tobacco in well-lit areas protected from the scorching sun and wind. Suitable and light partial shade. The best soil is drained and moderately fertile. For those who are still familiar with soil crust, we recommend loosening the ground to stimulate budding. Who uses organic mulch, continue to fill it.

Large foliage of fragrant tobacco absorbs a large amount of moisture, constantly monitor the condition of the soil, - watering is frequent, but moderate, in no case do not allow drying. The plant is responsive to fertilizer, but frequent nitrogen supplements threaten to increase green mass and lack of flowers.

By the way, if the nightly varieties of tobacco uncover flower tubules and fill the garden with aroma in the middle of the day, then rain is coming. Anyway, it will be overcast.

Scented tobacco against the Colorado potato beetle

So, let's start with the main thing - who among you is familiar with the malicious and merciless pest of the potato Colorado beetle? You probably know how difficult and time-consuming the process of fighting an insidious enemy! So, recently we learned that fragrant tobacco is more like a bug than a potato, and now we will tell you how to use this nuance.

This method was shared with us by Yuri Petrovich Bozhenov from Moscow. The author has been looking for a reliable method of fighting the Colorado potato beetle for a long time, and it all boiled down to the fact that physical destruction requires too much strength and patience, scaring promotes dispersal of the beetle on other vegetable crops, and chemical destruction leads to the resistance of the pest to poisons.

This continued until Yuri Petrovich did not meet a message stating that the Colorado potato beetle, choosing between potatoes and fragrant tobacco, prefers the second, but tobacco is deadly poisonous to the pest.

The message seemed interesting to the author, having grown tobacco seedlings, he planted it at the same time as potatoes, the result was not long in coming, and Yuri Petrovich does not recall the Colorado potato beetle as a pest of potatoes for a long 8 years, you can imagine!

For those who want to try the method, the author gives several recommendations and calls, first of all, to be patient, because the whole process will take about three years, but the result is worth it!

  1. Tobacco seedling should be prepared 1.5 or 2 months before planting potatoes, by the time the bushes are planted in the ground they should reach a height of 15-25 cm. Sowing seeds at the same time as planting potatoes will cause the beetle to sweep away the first shoots of tobacco and continue feast on potatoes. If for some reason you did not have time to prepare the seedlings, plant it later, but this, of course, will affect the effect, well, nothing, by trial and error you will catch up in subsequent years.
  2. The author's experience suggests that the radius of the protection zone of a single plant exceeds 10 m.
  3. Be prepared, the fragrant tobacco you planted will attract the attention of beetles from all over the area, just in this nuance lies a certain complexity of the process that requires your patience.

In the first year, the author advises to surround a plot with potatoes with a hedge of fragrant tobacco with a step of 1 or 2 meters. How to act next year, you can determine on your own, based on local conditions. Starting from the third year, 36 tobacco bushes will be sufficient for 1 hectare of potato (20 along the perimeter and 16 in potato beds in 20 m increments). A large number of pests may require re-planting of tobacco seedlings, it is desirable to prepare for this in advance.

In fact, these are distracting landings, and the main advantage of the method is the fact that it does not require physical expenditures - they planted tobacco and forgot it. It is not necessary to lure the beetle, he comes to the poison and eats it until he dies, and tobacco is not addictive, unlike pesticides!

Taking advantage of the advice of Yuri Petrovich Bozhenov, be sure to send a review to the email address: [email protected], and do not forget to share your experience on the pages of our project “ECO Garden for All”

Sweet tobacco is a plant insecticide, it is resistant to diseases, and the pleasant smell doesn’t like pests, so it can be used as a natural shield for the safety of fruit, vegetables and other crops.

What can be concluded? The fragrant tobacco is a universal plant, and it is grown not only because of flowering. Fragrant, attractive flowers will not only decorate your site, but also protect it. We considered all the most important things about growing fragrant tobacco from seeds, and figured out when to plant these interesting flowers.
