Hello. Our name is Oleg and Oksana, and about 20 years ago we bought a private house near Krasnodar. From that moment on, we just got sick of our garden plot, especially with flowers, which we have here a lot and they bloom simply luxuriously: in summer and spring our plot looks like paradise.
Especially beautiful are our peonies. So we want to share the rules of feeding these luxurious flowers.
Peony feeding rules
Most appreciative of these flowers will be nitrogen-potassium fertilizers. It is best to start fertilizing in the third year of pion life, when their active flowering begins. Feed them need three times for the entire season:
- The first top dressing is done when the snow melts or immediately after it has melted. For one bush we need from 10 to 20 g of potassium and from 10 to 15 g of nitrogen. They are introduced after active watering or rain, but not in a dry soil,
- Next time feed during budding. The dosages of nitrogen and potassium per bush do not change, but add 15-20 grams of phosphorus,
- We carry out the third top-dressing in half a month after they have bloomed and buds are laid. Now we need only phosphorus and potassium in the same dosages as before.
It is very important to ensure that you do not overfeed the peonies, because with an excess of, for example, nitrogen, the formation of buds may decrease and the green mass will grow. Also, with an excess of fertilizers, the resistance of pions to various diseases decreases.
And before planting, you can feed the roots of flowers using a talker made of clay, which will help them to take root. It is made of 10 liters of water, 5 kg of clay, heteroauxin (two tablets), and copper sulfate (60 g). You can also add wood ash (half a kilogram). It is enough to dip and dry the roots into this mixture. Then you can plant.
But in the planting pit you can add compost, rotted manure and peat plus topsoil.
Ashes or bone meal (grams 300) or superphosphate (up to 200g) are also added to the mixture. To reduce the acidity of the soil, you can use hydrated lime (up to 400 g). Lime do not forget to grind.
Fertilizers for pions do it yourself
These magnificent flowers will be very grateful to organic top dressing which can be made and by own strength.
For the preparation of such a tool you need either mullein or bird droppings.
Fresh cow dung to a large barrel of water is needed near the bucket, which we plant in five buckets of water. Avian litter should be diluted to 25 buckets. We put in the sun and let wander for up to half a month (at least 10 days).
After a couple of weeks, when everything is fermented, we add superphosphate (from 200 g to 300) and half a kilogram of wood ash.
Before feeding, the solution from manure is diluted with two parts of water, with bird droppings - three parts.
Fertilizers and flower dressing are many, but not everyone is suitable for peonies. Stop worth on two store options.
This mineral fertilizer and all its elements here are contained in cheilat form. This means that peonies absorb Kemira without additional processing by soil microorganisms.
The tool is used three times for the entire season. In March and after the peonies have faded (in about seven days), a remedy such as Kemira Universal will be appropriate.
Watering flowers, pour a handful of funds under each bush. Do not forget to put fertilizer in the soil. The following feeding is done with the help of Kemira-kombi.
And the second dressing is carried out with Kemira-Kombi fertilizer. It dissolves rather quickly and goes directly to the root color system. Just pour a handful of tools under each bush and water it abundantly.
This fertilizer is organic and microbiological. Prepare it based on EM technology. Living microorganisms present in the tool, increase the fertility of the earth for pions and improve its structures.
Baikal M can be added to the compost, and it is possible for them to mulch the earth in the fall. Mulch should have a thickness of from 7 cm to 10.
If the peony does not bloom
Here there are both folk ways to stimulate flowering, and quite scientific. So, our neighbors under the bushes bury rotten fish. Actually, the secret is that it is ordinary. Instead of fish, you can just add saltpeter.
You can also try springing your flowers with potassium permanganate in the spring (the solution can be strong), when budding with manure, and in the fall just cover with compost. Sometimes potassium sulphate is used to stimulate flowering.
There is another option to stimulate flowering. In the fall (closer to October) we pour potassium chloride and add wood ash (do not forget to dry). On a tablespoon of such ash put under each peony bush in October.
In the spring, peony is poured on manure slurry, and by May we are switching to potash fertilizers. They must be alternated using either potassium nitrate, potassium sulfate, or potassium permanganate. You can also spray superphosphate.
Top dressing foliar
It is done throughout the summer (and spring) season and is that you spray the leaves of flowers. You can also water it, but the watering can should have a fine sieve. For this, for example, a tool such as Ideal is suitable.
Dissolve according to the instructions and add detergent to the solution in a small amount (you can use laundry soap): for 10 liters of solution, you need about a tablespoon. Soap will help to delay the remedy on the leaves and flowers.
Also, foliar dressing can be done in three stages: at the first, when the ground parts of the bushes only sprout, pour urea solution: for 10 liters of water it needs 50 g. For the second dressing (30 days), add a micronutrient tablet.
The third time, when faded, we pour only the solution with two tablets of micronutrients. It is better to carry out such a procedure in the evening or on an overcast day.
Top dressing of pions at landing
Peonies - lush perennials. They usually begin to bloom in the 3rd year of life, but the profusion and beauty of this spectacle is largely laid back at a young age, when planted. After you have chosen the right place for the flowers on the plot, you should start preparing the ground. It can be enriched with a solution of infused mullein mixed with trace elements:
- mix fresh manure with water (ratio - 1 to 6),
- leave the mixture with the mixture in the sun for a couple of weeks,
- after fermentation, add superphosphate (0.2 kg) and wood ash (0.5 kg),
- mix thoroughly
- dilute with water 1: 2,
- just pour the solution onto the soil and mix with the ground.
If everything was done correctly, then before the third season such supplements will not be necessary for pions. Will need only foliar. They will help the plants to develop the underground part. The process can be divided into three steps:
Council To achieve the best effect, conduct procedures after sunset, but before night falls.
If you missed the tillage before planting, then during the first year of life, take extra time to feed the peonies three times:
- in May add nitrophoska to the soil: 100 g per 1 sq. m. m,
- after 2-3 weeks, repeat the procedure
- after another 2-3 weeks, fertilize the soil with potassium-phosphate mixtures.
Features of the annual feeding of peonies
After the third year of life, plants are fertilized according to a different scheme. Now it is important for peonies not only to strengthen the stem and grow greens, but also to form healthy and viable buds in large quantities. The initial supply of microelements at the bush runs low, so it needs to be replenished. 3-time care is considered effective:
- Immediately after the snow melts, the flowers need strength to resume the growing season. To do this, without embedding in the soil, scatter the nitrogen-potassium mixture around each culture. Norm - 10-15 g per shrub. It is important that the substances do not fall on the plant itself.
- Secondary pions are fertilized at the beginning of budding with a mixture of phosphorus (20 g), potassium (15 g) and nitrogen (10 g). The number indicated on each bush. The mineral complex is brought under seal in soil.
- 14 days after the first buds bloom, you need to feed the peonies a third time. This is important for a good wintering and successful flowering in the next season. Mix 15 g of potassium and 20 g of phosphorus.
Recommendations flower growers on peonies fertilizer
In any business balance is important. If in the spring to overfeed peonies with nitrogen, then foliage will go into a wild growth, and the flowers will be reduced. Overabundance of other trace elements also adversely affect the plant. When calculating the rules, use the advice of experienced flower growers:
- Mineral fertilizers will be ineffective on organic poor sandy soils. In this case, divide the second and third dressings into two equal parts and apply them with a clear interval of 12-14 days.
- Shrubs growing on poor soil, separately feed the burmagnium mixture. Make no more than 5 g per square 3-4 times per season.
- To fertilizers delivered to the address, and not to the surrounding weeds, put them in small grooves made a foot from the bush.
- Even peonies are very fond of rye bread. Put a loaf in cold water. Wait for 8 hours. Then dilute the resulting mass in 2 buckets of water. Just pour the solution into a flower garden, without fear of overdoing it. The optimal time is the appearance of the first shoots. Bread will give impetus to the development of the root and budding.
Fertilizing peonies is not difficult. It is important to remember that this should be done only in the spring or in the first days of summer. Later feedings will lead to looseness of the structure of the stems. The plant will become vulnerable to fungi and various diseases.
Top dressing of peonies in the spring
It is known that peony bushes can grow in one place for up to 50 years, while blooming every year in full color. All that is needed for this is proper care, which includes watering, loosening, adding nutrients, combating diseases and pests.
This procedure is especially important in spring and summer, during the growing season. The purpose of this article is to describe in more detail the terms and methods of conducting such procedures, to reveal their features and rules.
What is spring dressing for?
Spring has a special place among all seasonal feeds. After all, it depends on it how quickly the bushes will wake up after winter, whether they have enough strength for abundant and long flowering (Figure 1).
For this reason, experienced gardeners spend a whole range of activities in the spring aimed at introducing necessary nutrients into the soil.
How to fertilize peonies in spring
The most important for the growth of culture are elements such as nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. In this case, the first top dressing should include nitrogen and potassium to ensure the growth of green mass to the plant. Phosphorus is included in the second dressing. And if for the first time nitrogen prevails, then in the second all elements are taken in approximately equal amounts (10-15 g).
Experienced gardeners know how to fertilize peonies in the spring, but newcomers in growing flowers will need some useful tips.
The most popular fertilizers in the spring are considered (Figure 2):
- Kemira, which can be made three times per season. The procedure for its introduction is simple: you should put a handful of fertilizer in the recess under the bush and sprinkle with earth. For each separate stage of plant development, the following types of the preparation are used: Kemira-Universal is applied in early spring before flowering, and Kemira-Kombi is used for the second feed. This drug is so easily dissolved that it is simply poured onto the surface of the earth and watered the plant.
- Baikal EM-1 is widely used among organic products. It not only nourishes the soil, but also improves its structure. In the fall, this drug must be mixed with compost, which is used as a mulching material for the winter.
- Chicken manure can also be used as a source of nutrients. For its preparation, half a liter of litter is poured with a bucket of water and infused for 2 weeks. The infusion is applied diluted with water in a 1: 3 ratio. For greater effect, the addition of a handful of wood ash is also practiced.
For foliar fertilizers apply any complex fertilizers that are dissolved in water according to the instructions. In early spring, you can also use a solution of urea (50 g per 10 liters of water) with the addition of trace elements to it a month after the first.
From the video you will learn more useful tips and practical recommendations for spring feeding.
Types of dressings
Especially strongly indicated flowers need nitrogenous compounds, but far from last place for them are such useful substances as potassium and phosphorus.
In addition, if the lush flowering of your “wards” is really important, then you should stock up on fertilizers based on magnesium, iron, boron, zinc and copper, which are also needed by plants, albeit in smaller doses. All these micronutrients can be supplied in two main ways: root and foliar.
The effectiveness of any top dressing when caring for peonies depends not only on which particular composition is used for fertilizer, but also on the time it is applied to the soil or plants. So, it is more appropriate to use some drugs in spring, while others are suitable only for autumn processing, because at different periods of its growth and development the plant needs different micronutrients.
For the first fertilization of pions, the foliar method is usually used, immediately after the snow melt. At this time, nitrogen-potassium fertilizers per 20-30 g of the mixture per bush will be especially important for flowers.
14-21 days after using the first nutrient composition for top dressing of peony bushes (about one to two weeks before the plant blooms), a second top dressing can be performed using liquid nutrients for this purpose.
To 10 liters of real cow dung, you should add 20-25 g of potash fertilizer and twice as much phosphorus fertilizer, pouring about 2-3 liters of the prepared mixture under each bush.
Third time nutrient formulations are applied to the soil. after the plant blooms. The following solution is perfectly suitable for the role of a nutrient mixture: 10-15 g of potassium sulfate and about 30 g of superphosphate should fall to a ten-liter bucket of infused manure, and after mixing, the ready solution is poured under the shrub. The specified amount of fluid will be sufficient for 1 m² of plantings.
How to feed: options for fertilizers
We found out exactly when it is worth fertilizing peonies, it remains to figure out what you need to water the flowers for their lush and prolonged flowering. First of all, it should be noted that everything is good in moderation, therefore, both in spring and at other times, all the compositions used for fertilizing should be applied according to the recommendations given and in the correct dosages.
Otherwise, an excessive amount of, for example, nitrogen will lead to the growth of the leaf part to the detriment of flowering.
For active growth and good flowering of pions, fertilizer needs to be taken care of in the fall, providing the soil and rhizome with a sufficient amount of micronutrients. Organic compounds are perfectly suited for this purpose, since they contain the most diverse components necessary for the plant.
Usually for autumn organic dressing use compost, manure or humusby simply laying them on the ground under a bush. Gradually rotting away, all the nutrient components are dosed out of them, which eventually descend closer and closer to the root system of pions.
In addition, such organic matter also performs another important function: it does not allow the ground to freeze, since the decomposition of manure occurs with the release of heat required by plants in particularly harsh winters.
With the onset of the first steady frosts, the shoots of the plants may freeze over, after which they are cut off flush with the soil (so that the hemp is invisible). After completing this procedure, you can additionally mulch the earth using humus, compost and fallen leaves.
Such an approach to integrated nutrient supply in the autumn will help prepare the peony for lush flowering for the next year, especially if you back up the positive effect with the correct fertilizers in the spring time.
If we are talking about plants that have been on the same place for a long time without transplanting, then you can use ready-made organic fertilizer called “Baikal EM-1”, with the presence of live microorganisms in its composition.
The latter have a good effect on the soil structure and increase its fertility, but before spring dressing with the indicated preparation, it must be mixed with autumn compost and then used as mulch. The thickness of such a "fertilizer" layer should not exceed 7-10 cm.
No less popular and so-called "Folk recipes" of creating organic compounds. So, the lush flowering of your peonies is capable of providing ordinary bread, and all you need is to soak half the loaves in sweet water for the night (two tablespoons of sugar are enough for a glass of water), and in the morning drain the mixture, and pour the peonies from the ground with this solution.
Mineral supplements include a wide variety of formulations that are easy to find in specialized stores today. For example, a well-known representative of this group is the drug. Kemiraused three times per season.
With the onset of spring (before flowering), a more suitable composition will be Kemira Universal, and it is also used in 7 days after the end of flowering plants. This preparation is quite simple to use: after making a small depression under the bush, a small handful of the specified composition is poured into it and powdered with soil on top.
For the second feeding as well Kemira Kombi, and this time you can not dropping it. Just pour the component packaging on the ground under the peonies and pour abundantly on top. This composition dissolves rather quickly, so it will soon arrive at the root system of the plant.
For foliar fertilizers, ready-made complex preparations (for example, the aforementioned "Ideal"), most of which must first be dissolved in water in accordance with the instructions.
Another useful composition with a whole range of trace elements is the drug "Siliplant", which is able to increase the strength of peony fabrics and optimize its own protective forces of colors.
Due to the improved immunity of the plant, the likelihood of its disease is reduced and growth is improved, due to which the effect of the drug is often compared with the effect of growth stimulants. To prepare a ready solution for treating bushes, you need to mix 2-3 ml of the preparation with 1 liter of water.
In a word, there are many options for preparations for mineral and organic supplements, but much in this matter depends on the characteristics of the growth of the plant, the climatic region and the personal preferences of the gardener.
